The idea for SegWit was first introduced by Pieter Wuille at a Bitcoin conference in 2015. Wuille is a Bitcoin developer and the co-founder of Blockstream, a software company that specializes in digital security for financial services. SegWit – also referred to as Wrapped or Nested SegWit – reduced the size of each transaction’s data. It did this by separating certain data of the transaction signature from the transaction. By making transactions lighter in size, more transactions can fit into a single Bitcoin block. SegWit (Segregated Witness) was a major upgrade for Bitcoin.

SegWit, on the contrary, was a soft fork or partial update of Bitcoin’s protocol. To implement it, the Witness’s signature must be segregated in a new part of the virtual block. And its anchor (Merkle Root) recorded in the transaction of miners’ fees. SegWit is an improvement over the current bitcoin blockchain which reduces the size needed to store transactions in a block and it is implemented as a soft fork on the Bitcoin network.
By separating the transaction signatures from bitcoin transactions, it allows more transactions to fit within one block.
Segwit fixes many bugs currently in the protocol, and allows for some scaling using an effective blocksize increase. Almost two years of debate Segwit stands for Segregated Witness.
